Communication in action
A devotional series for those rebuilding after loss, pain, and/or trauma*
The way we communicate is essential to our relational health. Because our communication influences the way others view us, it also impacts how they connect with and respond to us. Similar to all the aspects of health we have already discussed, we can learn about communication by looking to God’s word, the Bible.
At the beginning of creation, God spoke and the world was formed. God said it, and it was so. He breathed life into creation and used words to guide and direct his people. By sending Jesus, who is identified as “the Word”, God communicated his great love for those he had created in his image.
Throughout the gospels, we see Jesus communicate through invitation; his offer into new, abundant life came in the form of compassion and connection.
Jesus communicated with and challenged all people with love. Many times his invitation to those around him came in the form of a question similar to, “What do you want?” Their faith-filled answers led to physical and spiritual healing, removal of stigma and shame, as well as changed lives.
It is often challenging to speak in the ways that are modeled by Jesus. However, it is in our best interest to reclaim healthy communication patterns, first by changing our thoughts and letting that lead to change in action.
In the book of Proverbs, we learn that wisdom in communication begins with self-control. It is also noted that wise speech is free from the following: lying, flattery, gossip and hatred. In contrast, wise speech corrects, shows restraint, is well-timed and blesses those who hear it.
Your words will be pleasing to God and those around you when you speak life and encouragement over others. When you make sure that your words are good and helpful, even in conflict or confrontation. And, as always, when you are unsure how to communicate love, hurt, truth, forgiveness, etc., you can consult with your creator and he will guide and direct you on when and how to speak.
